Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs): 1. How do I launch the iTunes software? Answer: For a computer that has a version of the Windows operating system, click "Start" then "All Programs" (or "Programs"), then locate the iTunes option. Alternately, you may wish to use the desktop shortcut to launch iTunes, provided you selected this option during installation. On a Macintosh computer that has the OS X operating system, examine the menu of items (visible when you drag the mouse pointer to the far right of the desktop screen). iTunes should be listed with the other installed applications. 2. How do I stop the "A newer version of iTunes is available" message from appearing when I open iTunes each time? Answer: On the menu at the top of the iTunes window,, click "Edit." then click "Preferences." In the "General" preferences settings, locate the "Check for updates automatically" option. Click to remove the check mark for this option, then click "OK." Please note: it is a good idea to obtain an iTunes update every month or so, but it is not necessary to receive updates more frequently. 3. How do I get an update for my iTunes software, if I've already shut off iTunes automatic updates? Answer: On the menu at the top of the iTunes window, click "Help" then "Check for Update" to manually check for iTunes software updates. 4. How do I access the podcast files that I've already downloaded from SCC? Answer: Open iTunes, then click "Podcasts" in the menu choices on the left side of the screen. The podcasts you've received from SCC (and others) should be visible. 5. How do I change the column headings displayed in iTunes? Answer: On the menu at the top of the iTunes window, click "View" then "View Options." Click to select/deselect the options you choose. Please note that it is best to display these options for SCC podcasts: Time, Artist, and Genre. You may also wish to display the Size option. 6. How do I play audio files (including podcasts for my SCC OnLine classes) with the iTunes software? Answer: If iTunes doesn't automatically play your MP3 and other audio files, you may need to set a preference in iTunes. On the menu at the top of the iTunes window, click "Edit" then click "Preferences." Click the "Advanced" tab then locate the "Use iTunes as the default player for audio files" option. Be sure to select this option, then click "OK." Please note that you may need to reset this option periodically if you install other audio player programs on your computer, as other programs may override the player preference. 7. How do I add iTunes to my Windows quick launch toolbar or to the Windows system tray? Answer: To add an iTunes shortcut to the quick launch toolbar, make sure that you've right-clicked the Windows toolbar (at the bottom of the screen) and that you've selected the quick launch toolbar from the toolbar options. When the quick launch toolbar is visible, drag the shortcut to iTunes to the toolbar to add it as a quick launch item. To add iTunes to the Windows system tray, make sure that iTunes is running. On the menu at the top of the iTunes window, click "Edit" then "Preferences." Click the "Advanced" tab then locate and select the "Show iTunes icon in system tray" option. 8. How do I set an option in iTunes so that the default text is displayed in a larger font? Answer: On the menu at the top of the iTunes window, click "Edit" then "Preferences." On the "General" options tab, locate the "Source Text:" and "Song Text:" options. Set both options to "Large" then click "OK." The iTunes menu on the left and the information about SCC podcast files and other files should now appear larger on your screen. 9. How do I check my Internet connection with iTunes? Answer: On the menu at the top of the iTunes window, click "Help" then "Run Diagnostics." Select "Network Diagnostics" then "Next." iTunes will check your Internet connection and will provide you with information about your computer's connection to the Internet. (This information may be helpful to your Internet provider if you're experiencing Internet connection problems.) Please note that a "Save" option is available so that you can save the diagnostic report. Also, be sure to scroll through the report to view all of the information gathered by the diagnostic test. The iTunes Network Diagnotics function will indicate whether iTunes is allowed by your firewall and other security software programs. 10. How do I find the answer to a question not listed here?
